Preventing and remedying stomach problems
Stomach problems and stomach ulcers are common in horses, ponies and foals. Several studies show that half of horses have stomach ulcers. In sport horses, this % is even higher. Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) or stomach ulcers are often not immediately visible in horses but are painful and can reduce condition and performance. What exactly are gastric ulcers and how do you recognize gastric problems in your horse? And what can you do about it as an owner?
The horse's stomach
A horse is by nature a grazing animal; they eat much of the day. Therefore, the function of the stomach in a horse is different from other animals. It is a "conduit" which is in constant use. Thus, no food is stored in it, as in cows, for example.
A horse's stomach also produces continuous stomach acid. Stomach acid has an important function in the digestion of food and render bad bacteria harmless.
Stomach ulcers
The stomach acid is normally neutralized with the food and by the horse's saliva which is produced when chewing roughage. If a horse has unlimited access to roughage, there is often no problem. Things can go wrong if a horse is fed several times a day. Stomach acid production continues, but there is no stomach filling. The stomach acid balance is out of balance. The acid attacks the stomach lining, causing wounds. These are called gastric ulcers.
A horse can express stomach ulcers or stomach irritation in a variety of ways. Do you recognize the following symptoms: excessive salivation, teeth grinding, yawning, decreased appetite for work, decreased appetite, recurrent vague colic symptoms? Then stomach damage or stomach ulcers may be a cause.
The solution is Happy Belly Egusin SLH
Happy Belly Egusin SLH is for horses that need immediate support of the stomach wall and for stomach problems. It can be used in the acute phase of stomach problems. The buffering components ensure a normal acid balance in the stomach. The stomach wall is supported in recovering from the acting stomach acid. Gastric emptying slows down, meaning that the stomach contents do not pass through to the intestine as quickly. As a result, the stomach contents also have a buffering effect. At the same time, specific (natural) gel-forming components provide a protective layer on the stomach lining. Egusin SLH also contains components that balance intestinal bacteria, positively supporting digestion.
After using 2 buckets (about 4 weeks), you can switch to Happy Belly Egusin 250, which will maintain and continue the recovery of gastrointestinal function and prevent the recurrence of symptoms.

The "stress" stomach
"Good feeding" does not always guarantee that a horse will not develop stomach problems. The causes are diverse. Stress causes the release of certain hormones that can affect gastrointestinal function and health. A horse's stomach is an important part of digestion. During periods of stress, proper maintenance of gastrointestinal function is especially important. Examples include transport, intensive training, competitions, weaning foals and after a period of fasting such as illness and surgery.
The solution for a sensitive "stress" stomach : Happy Belly Egusin 250
Happy Belly Egusin 250 is used for horses with a sensitive (stress) stomach. For example when moving house, competitions, during illness/surgery or around weaning foals.
Happy Belly Egusin 250 is a combination of ingredients that ensure proper acid balance in the stomach and a protective layer of the stomach wall. Furthermore, it contains specific fibers that provide slower gastric emptying. This provides additional support in maintaining an optimal acid balance in the stomach.
